PEPCO, a leading electricity provider in Puntland, Somalia, supplies power to urban residents, commercial facilities, and critical public services. The company is currently implementing a large-scale urban grid upgrade, involving the installation of 1,000 outdoor utility poles to enhance power transmission and distribution along major roads and residential areas. Real-time monitoring of pole-mounted transformers will be implemented to ensure grid stability and safety.
To enable remote operation and intelligent monitoring, Acrel deployed an integrated solution combining the ADW300-4G energy meter with an IoT platform, providing real-time metering, fault alerts, and centralized control. The total project investment is approximately US$200,000.
Project Name: PEPCO Outdoor Poles Transformer Moitoring Project
Project Location: Somalia, Africa
Project Products: ADW300-4GHW Wireless IoT Meter & Acrel IoT Platform
1.High Maintenance Costs and Inefficient Manual Operations: With widespread equipment and long distances between poles, customer relies heavily on labor-intensive manual meter reading, which is time-consuming and prone to error.
2.Delayed response to equipment failures: Without effective real-time monitoring, issues with transformers or overhead lines may go unnoticed, increasing the risk of outages and equipment damage.
3.Absence of an Integrated Monitoring and Management Platform: The existing infrastructure lacks a centralized platform for monitoring the status of electrical assets across different regions. This results in poor data visibility, inefficient maintenance planning, and limited support for data-driven operational decisions.
Acrel Solution
Hardware: ADW300-4G Energy Meter
• Supports three-phase electrical parameter monitoring with alarms for phase loss and phase imbalance
• Equipped with 4G wireless communication, suitable for outdoor environments without wired networks
Software: Acrel IoT Energy Management Platform
• Enables centralized monitoring of all project meters with real-time data visualization
• Provides voltage and current trend analysis, and intelligent fault alarm notifications
• Supports multi-level user access and device geolocation mapping
Details
1. Significant reduction in labor and maintenance costs: Originally requiring 30–50 personnel working 3–5 days per month for meter reading, the system now allows for real-time data collection, saving over 90% of manpower.
2. Transformer operation visualization: The platform continuously monitors critical parameters (current, voltage, power factor, etc.), ensuring transformers operate within safe load limits and reducing the risk of overloading and damage.
3. Remote alarms and early warning:
Real-time alarms for phase loss, current anomalies, and phase imbalance
Multi-channel alerts via app notifications, and web interface
By introducing Acrel's smart metering and IoT platform, PEPCO will significantly enhanced its ability to manage a distributed power network. The project marks a major step in the modernization and intelligent operation of Somalia’s power infrastructure and serves as a model for future rural grid upgrades and renewable energy integration projects.
