As electric mobility accelerates across Africa, battery swapping has emerged as a critical solution for improving efficiency and reducing downtime for electric motorcycles.

GOGO, a fast-growing electric motorcycle operator in Uganda, is rapidly expanding its battery swapping network. To ensure safe, efficient, and scalable operations, GOGO required a smart energy monitoring system capable of supporting distributed infrastructure.

Acrel delivered a fully integrated IoT energy solution, enabling real-time monitoring, enhanced safety, and centralized management.

    Customer Pain Points

    The customer required a reliable and scalable IoT energy monitoring solution with the following capabilities:

    • Accurate energy meteringfor each battery swapping station
    • Support for multiple communication methods(Ethernet, WiFi, 4G) due to different site conditions
    • Integration of DI/DO functionsfor device control and signal acquisition
    • Cable temperature monitoring and alarmto prevent overheating and explosion risks
    • A centralized cloud platformfor unified monitoring with multi-level user access

    Challenges

    • Distributed stations across different regions in Uganda
    • Unstable communication environments (no unified network condition)
    • Limited space in distribution cabinets
    • High safety requirements due to battery charging systems
    • Need for scalable IoT architecture

    Acrel provided a complete IoT-based energy monitoring solution, including hardware + cloud platform.

    Smart Energy Meter – ADW300 Series

    The ADW300 IoT Wireless Energy Meter was selected as the core device.

    • Full electrical parameter measurement: voltage, current, power, energy, harmonics
    • Multi-communication support: 4G, WiFi, RS485, LoRaWAN
    • Built-in 2 DO / 4 DI functionsfor remote control and signal input
    • Multi-point temperature monitoring (NTC sensors)for cable safety
    • Flexible installation in compact distribution boxes
    • High accuracy (Class 0.5S)

    This makes it ideal for EV charging infrastructure, battery swapping stations, and distributed energy systems.

    IoT Platform – Acrel EIoT System

    Acrel deployed its EIoT Energy Management Platform, enabling:

    • Real-time energy data monitoring
    • Remote device management
    • Multi-site centralized supervision
    • Hierarchical user access (headquarters / regional / site level)
    • Alarm system (overcurrent, overheating, abnormal consumption)
